I'm just wondering if anyone has any ideas on how I can accomplish this task:
I have a slice from the trunk of a grand old tree that unfortunately lost its life to "development" in my neighborhood. It is about 30" in diameter and about 10" thick. I am looking to make a wide, flat drum out of it, which means cutting it down to a ring, both on the inside and outside. Any ideas on how I could best accomplish this?
Thanks!

Re: help needed -- making a large drum
Thu, August 18, 2005 - 1:46 PMHi Matthew,
My first thought is the moisture content of the wood. Make sure it's dry enough, so there will be less chance of it spliting on you later.
I have been doing some sculptural pieces out of some thick cedar that had to come down after hurricane Isabel. A Saw Zaw with a 9" blade chisel point teeth, maybe 9 tpi has been working great for my rough cuts. I think that there is a 12" blade too. Just take the saw and use it like a jig saw. Slowly to minimize blade travel and make your first cuts at least an 1" away from your final thickness in case of travel.
Please post some pictures of your work. I have made a couple of drums out of staves. I have always wanted to try carving one out of a stump. Good luck.

Re: help needed -- making a large drum
Thu, August 18, 2005 - 4:45 PMIt's been drying for about 6 months now, thanks for the warning on that.
It's been a while since I've worked with a sawzall -- Should I have any concerns about the blade bending as it cuts? The wood isn't too dense . . .
I'll post photos. It may be a while before it is done, but I'll get to it.

Re: help needed -- making a large drum
Fri, August 19, 2005 - 5:02 AMYeah, the blades going to bend. That's what I meant by traveling. sorry poor choice of words. If you have access to a large bandsaw that would get a great way to make the outside cuts.
For the interior, maybe take a spade bit -because of the 10" thickness- and drill a series of holes around the perimeter of the intereior circle. This would help with the bending by allowing you to correct it quickly or remove the issue altogether and shouldn't take as long. This is only for your rough shape, so don't get to close to your final shape lines yet. You'll need chisels, planes and files for that.
If I can make a suggetion of the "Micro-planes" files. Inexpensive and removes wood fast.
Something else that I thought of last night was that you might want to check out some of the Taiko drum making sites. If your not familar with Taiko drums, it is a Japanese drum that is very large, traditionally made from one piece of Elm. I have a antique one that has about a 2' dia. and is about 8" thick. Bison skin is usually used for the head. I found a great site one time that showed a guy making one. Good pictures. I'll try to find it for you.
Good luck.

Re: help needed -- making a large drum
Fri, August 19, 2005 - 5:54 AMI couldn't find the particualr site that I was looking for, but there seems to be a lot more information since the last time I did a search. The Hira Daiko is the drum that I have. The Hira Daiko is defined as having a larger head dia. than the depth.
Another drum that might give you some ideas is the Native American frame, hoop, Pow Wow, etc... drums.

Re: help needed -- making a large drum
Wed, October 19, 2005 - 6:34 AMAndy, thanks for your suggestions. I have wanted to build a drum from a stump as well. So far, I have only reheaded drums & sanded down the inside of a couple of drums that weren't very smooth or evenly carved & the neck was too tight.
A neighbor cut down his tree a couple of years ago & gave my husband the pieces. They have been sitting in the yard since (what we haven't used in the fireplace). Do you think this would be any good to use for a drum or has it been sitting out too long?
Thanks
Brigit

I can't really make that call without seeing it. If the wood hasn't been under shelter, my guess is that it's beyond the point of being used for a drum.
What kind of wood is it though? A really hard wood or a cedar weathers well and could still be used.

Re: help needed -- making a large drum
Thu, August 18, 2005 - 2:35 PMSeems a shame to make a drum out of it. Fin a band saw and cut five 2" discs for table tops. -

Wed, October 19, 2005 - 6:32 AMLOL You're not a drummer so I'm not surprised you feel that way. ;)
Though the table tops sounds like a really neat idea, I'm more excited about the drum. Given the time & supplies, I'd do both.
