Need some help designing a pedestal for a queen size waterbed.
I want it to be about 16 inches verticle, but I'm not sure how best to accomplish that height. Any suggestions or redirections would be greatly appreciated.

This shows the assembly of a premade waterbed frame, but gives you shots of all the pieces going together.

Thu, December 30, 2004 - 6:34 AMwhy not frame it with dimensional lumber like a normal diaphram floor with screwed down sheathing, and bring it up to height using a toe kick that you have ripped out of ply, like kitchen cabinets secured with a cleat on the bottom............ -

Fri, December 31, 2004 - 5:12 AMWas thinking of just putting it up on struts with a top and bottom frame to give it full contact with the floor and with the deck, then making a skirt of some kind... plus I want to put a bookshelf up for the headboard, and drawers in the pedestal... not really sure about weight, though.. its going to be on the second floor. -

Re: Waterbed pedestal construction?
Fri, December 31, 2004 - 6:11 AMi dont know how much cabinet making experience you have, but i think that modular construction is smart on most furniture type things. also, you can frame the carcase with 1 1/8 ply, or dimensional, and apply finish wood material over that. have you looked up any plans on the internet or in any woodworking magazines? -

Re: Waterbed pedestal construction?
Fri, December 31, 2004 - 7:38 AMAs far as cabinet making goes, I have no experience. Really an amateur with this, to be honest. I can read blueprints, no problem, though.
And speaking of which, no, I haven't found any free ones yet. Next step was going to be a run to the bookstore, or the hardware store. I have seen plans for sale there before, but that was eons ago.
Farthest I've gotten is playing around in cad...

Re: Waterbed pedestal construction?
Thu, January 20, 2005 - 10:30 PMPersonally when I had to rebuild my waterbed I used 3/4" ACX 9 ply with a 9 sqare substructure and a single box around the whole frame if you want Plans give me your dimensions for the bed and I can drawup and send you some plans. I very strongly advise paying the extra $ for the ACX that way if the bag leaks the wood won't warp and it Stains really prety. -

Re: Waterbed pedestal construction?
Sat, January 22, 2005 - 7:35 AMSince I first posted this, I've drawn up some plans, and mostly what I'm concerned with is the pedestal right now:

I don't have the framework drawn in that will support the drawers, since right now I'm primarily concerned with the weight and design of the pedestal... I posted this also on a carpentry tribe, and one of the guys there said it looked good, but for now I'm just mulling things over until I can get started on it.
I guess my biggest concern now is what type of wood to make the internal pedestal out of?
And sorry.. what is ACX? -

Re: Waterbed pedestal construction?
Sun, January 23, 2005 - 1:16 PMACX is A grade of Ply wood in my oppinion it is the best available when strength is the question. it is also designed for wet outdoor applications (good idea for a water bed)
