Jointer?

This may be a stupid question, but what does a jointer do?

    A jointer allows you to put flat square edges on boards that are necessary to do glue ups for panels or table tops.

      also to make clean finished edges on any board...check out the porter cable model 126.....it is a hand held joiner plane, markeded as a door planer, i swear by it, i cant live without ie, it is used almost as much as my table saw, nothing can replace a shop joiner, but for what i do all too often where a shop joiner is not possible...because i travel from jobsite to jobsite all the time, i take it everywhere......indispensible.......
