okay dont be scared. taunton has a series on various machine including routers. its simple to build a table. dont be over whelmed. mine is laminated up from two layers of mdf, fit into my table saw extension side wing. i bought a roussue table plate and the template for installing it. now that i have confidence i might try using sheet lexan to build another one. as far as a fence goes i built mine out of mdf. its an L shape backed up with triangle supports to keep it square. its longer than the table and it just clamps to the table. check out american woodworker march 2003#99. thats where i got most of my plans for my table. just look online for free woodworking plans, dont go to the ones that are sponsered they try to get you to buy shit . try www.plans.3house.com i was looking at that link sight for scraper plane plans and they had router table plans. it really is simple to build one. ive also seen them made from kitchen counters , prelaminated ,heavey , no sag , you still would need a table insert, but think about that. once you get a table you are set. your imagination and buget for bits is the limit. ive made custom windows, trim ,siding and just wierd experimental routings with mine. as far a a router i have a dewalt 621 punge i got on sale ,it was a floor model at lowes, i use it as my hand held, i just bought a portercable with the variable speed(thats important) and the plunge and stationary base (thats hlpful) i got that from home depot and it was on sale, a floor model also. bosch is cool, but if your stuck with dewalt get something plunge, 2hp+ thats my opinion. and you said something about a miter stand , build one instead of those tube stands. ill take some pics of my chop table. good luck . if you need anymore of my advice for what its worth you can email me personally. good luck.

i found that its just easier to have two routers. One stays attached to the table, the other is free for whatever i need to do with it.

hi brady, can you tell more about woodrat. i have seen the site many times and read many an ad in fine woodwoorking magazine. but how easy is it really? i mean, how long to change from mortise to tenon, how long to change from dovetail to tenon? how easy are the changes?

also, for example, when i am in the middle of the project and am going from a dovetail joint to a dado. my mind is thinking of the project at hand and racing thru many things, i hate to be interrupted by a manual to use a machine on a different setup, this disturbs my chain of thought, how easy is the woodrat, is it user friendy, or like the leigh jigs (for me at least) i have to restudy the manual each time before use...... thanks, mark

yeppers, porter cable is the goods. i have 4 290 motors, 3 plunge bases, and half a dizen fixed bases, i also have the spiffy new 890 with the d handle and plunge base. the cool thing about the 890 is that there is a small screw on the base that allows tou to raise and lower the routher when it is on the table from tabove, all you have to do is drill a teeny tiny hole in the table on the right location. all of these are set so that i can make templates and use the same bushings and bits and run production trim jobs. they last forever.

i wouldnt buy a router table if my life depended on it. you are a woodworker, you can build one of your own, even if it is as simple as screwing a router base to the bottom of a piece of plywood, and fastening a joined board to the top.....premade router tables are for the birds in my opinion, you would be better server buying a real shaper machine...............all the pros i work with take pride in their own home made router tables......

it's funny (well, not really) how I'm loyal to some brands for certain tools:

table saw: delta
band saw: delta
drill press: delta
router: porter cable
12 v cordless drill: Milwaukee (I could any number of ways on this - the PC stuff looks nice)
Jig Saw: Bosch
Miter Saw: Ryobi

you won't be able to use the "made by B&D" slam much longer, I'm afraid RK - they recently bought Pentair, parent company of Delta and Porter Cable.

I heartily agree with the Porter Cable recommendation. They also package a set which includes 1 motor and a fixed and a plunge base for around $200.

I personally don't like DeWalt stuff. Their power tools are very pricey and kind of flimsy. Would you spend that much on a Black and Decker power tool, well who do you think makes DeWalt?

so I bought a book on working with routers. Damn. Now I'm scared. It seems that I'm going to need a table to do anything complicated -- such as mortises and tenons. But it also seems that for almost everything, I need to build some fancy jig or template. Sheesh.

new here, but... when it comes to routers I've always used Porter Cable, and I've had very good results with them. they're tough, accurate and reliabel. I've got 2 - one fixed and one plunge.

router tables are REALLY great tools, but I would caution against buying cheap. Porter Cable makes a good one, and building a table/cabinet to house it is a fun and easy project.

I use mine on every project.

When I read comments about router tables, most people complain about the fence.

Well, you can always get the full table if you find you use it more often, or build legs for the workbench-table.

The better the fence the more likely you are going to be able to use the router as a stand-in for a jointer and a shaper.

I'm thinking of buying a Dewalt router with two bases and then a separate mitre table. I don't think I need a full table (at $250-300), but just the table that sits on my workbench.

I found the table part of it to be singularly useful.

I got a refund check and decided to spring for the DeWalt 12" double-bevel mitre. What the hell. Hopefully I'll use it next week.

Now I'm turning my attention to routers. Any recommendations? Do I need a router table?
